The thyroid is a tiny butterfly-shaped gland in the lower part of the neck that releases the hormones necessary to regulate functions such as body weight and heart rate. There are about 40,000 new thyroid cancers in the U.S. each year, accounting for less than 3 percent of diagnosed cancers every year. The risk of the disease is two to three times higher than that of men, but men are more likely to die from it. The most common type of thyroid cancer has a high survival rate.
